But it's also about a girl whose autonomy is stolen by structures larger than herself, and who has no choice but to make the best of a shit situation (she becomes Queen of the Underworld!). ![]() This tale-often recounted as The Rape of Persephone-is sometimes told to explain why we have seasons. For those six months, Demeter despairs and makes the world barren. Or, in modern parlance, don't take that drink from the leery creeper.Īnyway, for this reason, Persephone owes six months of her life every year to Hades and the Underworld. There's a moral hidden here: Never eat the food of the dead. So Hekate-one of the few gods who can cross multiple liminal spaces-goes to the Underworld to retrieve Persephone, only for everyone to discover that while she was there, she ate six pomegranate seeds. Hekate, a Titan goddess who happened to hear screaming, wanders out of a cave and tells Demeter to talk to Helios, the sun god, because he sees everything from his chariot. Zeus- also Demeter's brother!-says it's cool, which is no surprise, so Hades sets a trap for Persephone and kidnaps her.ĭemeter obviously goes nuts looking for her kid. ![]() Its art is also way more consistent and feels like it has a lot more effort and thought put into it, it's gorgeous :' )ĭespite all of what I said above, I do hope it comes back from hiatus some day, it was an enjoyable read at the time, I just don't think it's developed enough yet to say whether or not it's the 'best' Hades x Persephone comic out there. For the unawares, some Myth 101 on the story that inspires the comic: Underworld god Hades-Demeter's brother-decides he's really into his niece, and asks Zeus, head of the Olympian gods, whether he'd be cool with him taking her. Persephone and Hades' relationship in Punderworld isn't that much more complex than LO's, they barely even know each other yet in the context of the comic's story (they literally just started to have extended interaction IIRC).ĭefinitely better than LO when it comes to the characterization though, it's a lot less problematic in its themes and moral code. And IMO that's what it feels like people are referring to when they say Punderworld's romance is better than LO, they're not talking about the actual canon storytelling, they're talking about the cute drawings and bonus content. Most of Punderworld's 'romance' isn't even canon in the story progression, it's just like, little doodles and bonus content, which to me is promising a story that hasn't even happened. there's barely been any actual story, not enough for me to say that I'm enjoying it more because there's not much to enjoy more than what LO offers (even if what LO offers is a trainwreck half the time lmao) Literally the majority of the comic as it currently stands has been spent on conversations/arguments between Persephone and Demeter (and Hades and Zeus), there's been very little actual development between Persephone and Hades so I don't think it's much better than LO when it comes to the romance. ![]() ![]() Punderworld's fine but I find it kinda confusing when people say it's better than LO? Like there are things about it that are executed better but like.
